Abstract

The girl code refers to a set of unspoken social rules that shape how adolescent girls form, maintain, and navigate close female friendships. These unwritten norms influence how they provide support, handle emotional challenges, and navigate moral decisions. Despite its significant impact on female adolescent relationships, research on the girl code, especially within the Philippine context, remains limited. This qualitative exploratory study examines how the girl code operates among cisgender Filipino adolescent girls, focusing on its key aspects, underlying values, development, enforcement, and consequences. Five focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted among close-knit female friendship groups of senior high school students aged 17 to 18 from a private university in Manila. Thematic analysis revealed that the girl code includes shared and implicit rules. These rules involve respecting romantic and emotional boundaries, maintaining trust and confidentiality, providing emotional support and inclusion, and resolving issues through open and sensitive communication. While these norms are not explicitly taught, they develop through shared experiences and repeated interactions. They are rooted in mutual values of respect, compassion, loyalty, and trust. Additionally, honest communication, group inclusion, and restorative dialogue enforce commitment to these codes. Following the girl code can strengthen female friendships and promote emotional well-being, while violations often lead to conflict, emotional distress, and possible alienation from the group. Overall, the girl code serves as an important moral guide in the context of friendships among adolescent girls. It helps them manage the complexities of connection, conflict, and security within their social circles.

Tumutukoy ang “Girl Code” sa mga di-nakasulat na social rules na humuhubog sa kabataang babae, at sa pagpapanatili at pagpapahalaga sa pagkakaibigan. Ang mga norm na ito ay nakaaapekto sa kung paano sila nagbibigay-suporta, humaharap sa emosyonal na mga hamon, at nagpapasya sa mga usaping moral. Sa kabila ng mahalagang papel nito sa ugnayan ng kabataang babae, nananatiling limitado ang pananaliksik sa kontekstong Pilipino hinggil sa “Girl Code.” Sinusuri ng kwalitatibong pag-aaral na ito kung paano umiiral ang “Girl Code” sa kabataang babae na cisgender, na nakatuon sa mga pangunahing aspekto, nakapaloob na mga pagpapahalaga, pag-unlad, paglinang, at mga resulta nito. Isinagawa ang limang focus group discussion (FGD) sa grupo ng matalik na agkakaibigang babae na pawang mga mag-aaral sa senior high school na may edad 17 hanggang 18 mula sa isang pribadong unibersidad sa Maynila. Makikita sa tematikong pagsusuri na binubuo ang “Girl Code” ng kolektibong pag-unawa sa mga norm. Kabilang dito ang paggalang sa romantiko at emosyonal na aspekto, pagpapahalaga sa tiwala at pagiging kompidensiyal, pagbibigay ng empsyonal na suporta at inklusibidad, at pagresolba ng mga isyu sa pamamagitan ng bukas at sensitibong komunikasyon. Bagama’t hindi tuwirang itinuturo ang mga norm, nahuhubog ang mga ito sa pamamagitan ng kolektibong karanasan at palagiang interaksiyon. Nakaugat ito sa pagbibigay ng respeto, malasakit, katapatan, at tiwala. Dagdag pa rito, ang tapat na komunikasyon, inklusibidad sa grupo, at maayos na diyalogo ay nagpapatibay sa pagsunod sa mga norm na ito. Ang pagsunod sa “Girl Code” ay nakatutulong sa pagpapatibay ng pagkakaibigan at sa pagpapabuti ng emosyonal na kalagayan, habang ang paglihis dito ay maaaring magdulot ng alitan, pagkalungkot, at pagkahiwalay sa grupo.
