Abstract

Within the context of Filipino gender and cultural norms, mothers often navigate both conservative and liberal approaches in raising their daughters. Among these, permissive parenting, which emphasizes freedom and minimal control, shapes adolescent development in unique ways. Therefore, this study explores how adolescent daughters perceive their permissive mothers’ influence on intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships. Grounded in the Self-Determination Theory, the study examines how autonomy, relatedness, and competence emerge in their daughters’ lived experiences and mother-daughter relationships. This research addresses the lack of local literature by shedding light on mother-daughter dynamics through an interpretative phenomenological approach. This study explores the lived experiences of adolescent daughters with permissive mothers. Eight female participants aged 16-18 years attending Senior High Schools within Metro Manila were selected using a modified version of the Parental Authority Questionnaire and underwent individual semi-structured interviews, which were analyzed thematically. These findings indicate how daughters perceive their mothers’ permissive styles: fostering autonomy, emotional openness, and self-confidence, contributing to intrapersonal growth through strengthened self-identity, and interpersonal growth through more positive and open social interactions. However, challenges such as unresolved conflicts and dependency issues also emerged, highlighting a complex relationship between maternal permissiveness and adolescent development. These discoveries advocate thorough explorations into how daughters perceive relational experiences with their mothers, especially in a culture still shaped by patriarchal norms. Ultimately, this study contributes to existing literature on mother-daughter dynamics and further examines knowledge on permissive parenting.

Abstract in Filipino [Abstrak]

Sa konteksto ng mga pangkasarian at kultural na pamantayan sa Pilipinas, ang mga ina ay kadalasang humaharap sa konserbatibo at liberal na mga pamamaraan sa pagpapalaki ng kanilang mga anak na babae. Isa sa mga ito ang permissive parenting, na nagbibigay-diin sa kalayaan at minimal na pagkontrol, at may natatanging impluwensiya sa paglinang ng mga adolescent. Kaugnay nito, sinuri ng pag-aaral kung paano nauunawaan ng mga anak na babae ang impluwensiya ng kanilang mga permissive na ina sa kanilang intrapersonal at interpersonal na ugnayan. Batay sa Self-Determination Theory, sinuri ng pag-aaral kung paano lumilitaw ang autonomy, relatedness, at competence sa kanilang mga danas at sa ugnayang ina at anak. Tinugunan din ng pananaliksik ang kakulangan ng lokal na literatura sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay-linaw sa dinamika ng ugnayang ina at anak gamit ang interpretative phenomenological approach. Nakatuon ang pag-aaral na ito sa mga danas ng walong (8) babaeng kalahok na may edad 16 hanggang 18, na nag-aaral sa Senior High School sa Metro Manila, na napili sa pamamagitan ng isang modified version ng Parental Authority Questionnaire at isinailalim sa indibidwal na semi-structured na panayam, na sinuri batay sa tema. Natukoy sa resulta kung paano nila binibigyang-kahulugan ang permissive na estilo ng kanilang mga ina, kabilang ang fostering autonomy, emotional openness, at self-confidence, na nag-aambag sa intrapersonal na pag-unlad sa pamamagitan ng pinagtibay na identidad, at sa interpersonal na pag-unlad sa pamamagitan ng mas positibo at malayang ugnayang sosyal. Gayunpaman, lumitaw rin ang mga hamon tulad ng hindi nalulutas na alitan at tendensiyang umasa, na nagpapakita ng masalimuot na ugnayan sa pagitan ng permissiveness ng ina at adolescent development. Iminumungkahi rin ang pangangailangan ng mas masusing pag-aaral sa karanasan ng mga anak na babae sa kanilang ugnayan sa mga ina, lalo na sa kontekstong patuloy na hinuhubog ng patriyarkal na pamantayan. Sa kabuoan, nakatutulong ang pag-aaral na ito sa pagpapalawak ng literatura hinggil sa dinamika ng ugnayang ina at anak at sa mas malalim na pag-unawa sa permissive parenting.
