Abstract (Filipino)

Ang pananaliksik na ito ay isang pagsusuri sa diskurso ng Talk to the People ni Dating Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte (DPRRD) bilang espasyo ng Sopla sa panahon ng pandemyang COVID-19. Ipinakita sa pag-aaral ang naging militaristikong pamamaraan ng pamumuno ni Duterte na nakatuon sa matinding kontrol at awtoridad upang tugunan ang krisis ng pandemya. Dinodomina ang diskurso ni Duterte sa paggamit ng emosyon, pagmumura, at impormal na tono upang itatag ang kanyang kredibilidad at katapatan bilang pinuno ng bansa. Dinalumat sa pag-aaral ang Sopla bilang isang agresibong retorikal na sandata ni Duterte upang barahin, pabulaanan, at sirain ang kredibilidad ng kanyang mga kritiko. Ang Sopla ni Duterte ay mas nagpalalim sa pulitikal na polarisasyon at pagkakabaha-bahagi ng bansa. Ang social media ay nagsilbing isang pampublikong Echo-Chamber at Multiplier ng Sopla. Ginamit ng mga tagasuporta ang Sopla bilang katanggap-tanggap na pamantayan ng komunikasyong pampulitika, habang ang mga kritiko ay gumamit ng kontra-Sopla upang kuwestiyonin ang kakayahang mamuno ni DPRRD. Ang mga talumpati ni DPRRD ay nagsilbing espasyo ng Sopla kung saan inilalabas ni Duterte ang kanyang personal at politikal na damdamin na naghatid ng koneksiyon sa kanyang tagasuporta ngunit nagdulot din ng pagkakahati sa publiko at kontrobersiya sa midya. Inaasahang makapag-ambag ang pananaliksik na ito sa pag-unawa sa ugnayan ng wika, kapangyarihan, at krisis sa konteksto ng pulitika sa Pilipinas at makatulong sa lalong pagpapalalim ng kritikal na pag-iisip hinggil sa diskursong politikal.

Abstract (English)

This research is an analysis of the discourse of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s Talk to the People as a space for Sopla during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study demonstrated Duterte’s militaristic style of leadership focused on intensified control and authority to address the pandemic crisis. Duterte’s discourse is dominated by the use of emotion, profanity, and an informal tone to establish his credibility and sincerity as the leader of the nation. The study conceptualized Sopla as an aggressive rhetorical weapon used by Duterte to counter, refute, and discredit his critics. Duterte’s Sopla further deepened political polarization ang division in the country. Social media serves as a public Echo-Chamber and Multiplier of Sopla. Supporters used Sopla as an acceptable standard of political communication, while critics employed counter-Sopla to question Duterte’s capacity to lead. Duterte’s speeches serves as a space for Sopla where Duterte released his personal and political emotions, which delivered connection to his supporters but also caused public division and media controversy. This research is expected to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between language, power, and crisis in the context of Philippine politics and help further deepen critical thinking regarding political discourse.
