Abstract/Summary

The enactment of RA 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 added two years to basic education. One of the rationales offered by proponents of the law is to ensure that Senior High School (SHS) graduates will be employable after completing the K-12 curriculum. While it is a bit premature to confidently assess the success or failure of the K-12 program, this study aims to guide the various institutions - public or private sectors, on the steps to be taken to further enhance the SHS program. The proposed study would contribute to this discourse by identifying the proper skills and competencies needed for the SHS graduates which also seeks the purpose to help in the enhancement and not to assess the said program. The study revealed that despite of identifying the employability of the SHS graduates as a rationale for the program, the result of the assessment of BPO employers shows that there are still identified skills needed to be enhanced by the K-12 program. This proportion is true even for the result of the Self perceived Job readiness of the SHS graduates wherein despite of having positive feedback, there is still a significant number of respondents that are unsure.

As the BPO industry is considered as one of the first industries that started to hire the SHS graduates, the researcher have used the said industry in order to achieve its objectives of identifying the proper skills and competencies needed for SHS graduates. In addition, the researcher believes that the proposed assessment from the BPO employers cannot be considered as a sufficient proof that the public sector or the government have to completely revise the SHS program but rather can be used as an evidentiary data that the K-12 program needs enhancement.

As the first batch of the SHS only graduated last 2018, it may still be too early to be gauging the success of the SHS program specifically in the performance of its graduates in the labor market. In this the study, certain areas were uncovered which can be used for the improvement of the implementation of the program and to boost the chances of achieving the employment.
