Abstract/Summary

This study explores, in the Philippine setting, the experiences of clinical trial participants, what made them join, and what made them stay in the trial until its completion. This study utilized a qualitative phenomenological approach and an interpretative phenomenological analysis of semi-structured interviews with six participants of clinical trials. The results first describe the context of the experiences and the main influences that led them to the clinical trial. Secondly, it presents participants’ experiences. Deciding to join the clinical trial, they weigh the practical benefits they will get, their purpose in joining, and their understanding of the clinical trial. They find the devotion and dedication to continue and renew their purpose in completing and getting to the results. Participants’ experiences are a complex mix of the present, future, tangible, and intangible things they give in and get from the clinical trial, from which their reasons, motivations, and perceptions are reflected and expressed. Two factors, finding a strong internal purpose and reciprocating a social contract, surfaced as the main factors that made participants continue participating in the clinical trial. The study contributed to the knowledge of conducting clinical trials in the Philippines. Participant experiences highlighted areas for improvement in how clinical trials are conducted and mirrored challenges in the broader setting of the Philippine health system. This enables stakeholders, such as regulators, research bioethicists, and clinical research professionals, in policy making and implementation of improvements that better respond to the needs of clinical trial participants and patients.
