Abstract/Summary

Interaction with gamification elements in mobile health applications (mHealth apps)—such as achievements, immersion, and social elements—aims to motivate users to engage in physical activities. However, existing literature lacks evidence on how each of these elements is associated with users’ physical activity engagement. To address this gap, the present study employs a descriptive correlational research design, using self-administered online surveys. A total of 109 mHealth app users within Metro Manila are included as participants in the study. Major findings indicate that overall use of gamification elements is significantly associated with varying levels of physical activity among mHealth app users. Specifically, high physical activity scores are associated with the use of achievement elements. These findings confirm that gamification elements have a promising impact on enhancing physical activity, guiding future research on gamification as a means of health promotion.
