Abstract (English)

In the production of children's literature in the Philippines, the retelling of our traditional lore—particularly prose narratives such as myths, folktales, and legends—remains a constant genre. To date, the retelling of these myths, folktales, and legends has not received sufficient critical attention, especially from critics or scholars of Philippine children's literature, whose analyses often focus solely on themes or subject matter. The tradition of retelling our traditional lore has yet to be fully explored or analyzed. Focusing on a prominent writer for Filipino children, this study aims to examine the overall retelling style of Rene O. Villanueva across three prose narrative sub-types: myths, folktales, and legends. It seeks to uncover the strategies, rhetorical devices, and formulas—as well as the processes or steps—he employed in retelling these stories for young readers. The study revisits the source texts (pre-texts) of Villanueva’s selected retellings to conduct an intertextual reading of the variants and to dissect the key components essential for identifying shifts in their underlying functions. Content analysis was utilized to examine the narrative structure of each sub-type. Villanueva employed specific language registers—or combinations thereof—depending on the sub-type: a hieratic or figurative register for myths; and an epic or colloquial/informal register for legends, and a demotic register—or everyday discourse/dialect—for folktales. In the process of ‘retelling,’ Villanueva performed a ‘re-narration’ for sub-types that already possessed a coherent framework or structure. Meanwhile, ‘rewriting’ was carried out through modification, adaptation, reduction, and expansion—specifically for sub-types requiring the characters to have their own voices, the addition of dialogue, the alignment of the setting with narrative events, changes to the ending, the selection of a dramatic scene within lengthy narratives, and the elaboration of events in shorter ones. These steps or processes resulted in two forms of ‘retelling’: reproduction and reversion. Villanueva’s ‘intervention’ in the traditional narratives was primarily ‘internal’; the details he added—such as dialogue, events, character actions or decisions, and so forth—originated from within the narrative itself.  The shortcomings he perceived in the source material became the space for his own ‘intervention.’ He first explored the original narrative, utilizing what he found within the text—or what remained after he stripped away the details he deemed unnecessary. By pruning these superfluous elements, he achieved a sense of coherence in the plot of his ‘retelling.’ The narrative direction became much clearer in Villanueva’s ‘retelling’ of some of our traditional folk wisdom.
