Abstract (English)

Gastrointestinal symptoms are commonly experienced worldwide, including college students who often experience various symptoms and health complaints especially because they are known to consume poor-quality diets. This study aims to explore the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and their association with eating habits and well-being among Pre-med Physics students in De La Salle University–Manila. A quantitative cross-sectional research design was employed using purposive sampling in selecting their participants. This study relied on a self-administered structured questionnaire such as Gastrointestinal Symptoms (GSRS), Rapid Eating Assessment for Participants (REAPS), and Digestion-associated Quality of Life (DQLQ). 42 participants reported experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms. Bloating was the most frequently experienced symptom (M=4.2143). Most of the participants have a poor eating habit having an average score of 22.85% and have low Digestion Associated Quality of Life having a mean score of 3.13, indicating that digestion is merely affecting quality of life among respondents. The results showed a positive and moderate relationship between gastrointestinal  symptoms and well-being, with a significant association (r=0.486, p=0.001). Moreover, a significant negative and weak association was found between Eating Habits and Gastrointestinal Symptoms (r=-0.333, p=0.031). Additionally, upper abdominal pain and bloating were found to significantly affect well-being, while skipping breakfast was the only eating habit that showed a significant effect on gastrointestinal symptoms. Therefore, the results of this study reported that as gastrointestinal symptoms increase, the well-being negatively increases, which concludes that GI symptoms have a significant association with the overall well-being.
