Abstract (English)
You Are All Monsters is a collection of short, Gothic horror stories written in English that speculate on the moral ambiguity between humans and non-humans. Five stories in the collection will explore answers to the central thematic question: Who is the monster in an imagined world where humans and Philippine mythological creatures co-exist? The setting will take place in an imagined society inspired by hybridized culture and norms from the pre colonial, colonial, and contemporary times of the Philippines. The audience is free to interpret an answer and even challenge the thematic question by whoever they see fit their own meaning and description of a “monster” as characters clash and/or coincide with their ideas of morality. These stories are inspired by the Gothic trope of generational trauma and repressed memory from Nick Joaquin’s Tropical Gothic, the metaphorical hauntings of the supernatural found in Edgar Allan Poe’s short stories, the Philippine mythological creatures’ folklore and their role in society in Maximo Ramos’ The Creatures of Philippine Lower Mythology and Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo’s Trese, and aesthetics of horror and desire from Yvette Tan’s Waking the Dead and Other Short Stories and Seek Ye Whore and Other Short Stories. The storytelling method of the collection is inspired by a semi-improvised podcast series, Midst, by Third Person. Each story will be narrated by an unnamed, omniscient, and unreliable narrator, playfully telling the story as if performing for an audience and breaking the fourth wall as they interact with the readers.
