Abstract (English)
Hating My Guts: A Gastrointestinal Memoir is a detailed firsthand account of my experiences with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Throughout my life, these illnesses have afflicted me in various ways — be it physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise. In six interrelated essays about family, generation gaps, food and culture, alcohol, love, and pain, I delve into the negative, neutral, and positive aspects of having grown up with such conditions. In turn, I reveal how GERD, IBS, and GAD have influenced the way I perceive both myself and the world around me, ultimately bringing me towards healthier ways to move forward in my life. Through reflecting on my struggles and situating them in wider contexts, I aim to create a deeply personal yet universal memoir that encapsulates my belief that reading and writing creative nonfiction mirrors how we choose to see and understand reality — an act that is nothing less than a mark of human resilience.
