Abstract (English)

From the farming songs that showcase the backbreaking labor of farming, to relationship-building through karaoke culture, to election jingles that are repeated throughout the campaigning period, music is without a doubt an integral part of Filipino lives. In Philippine history, music has been a way to capture the cultural nuances within a time period, especially during the different colonial periods where music was instrumental both as a means of resistance and a tool of oppression. During the 2022 Presidential Elections we can see the instrumental role of music once more, especially through the two leading presidential candidates, Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo and Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. This research will analyze the role of music beyond just the message that the presidential candidates hope to send across to their supporters, but also through how these supporters also used music within areas of discourse. This research will focus on two songs from each camp, namely “Nandito Na” by Volunteers from the BBM Supporters and “Papaya” by Urszula Dudziak from Marcos’ camp and “Rosas” by Nica Del Rosario and “Hataw Na” by Gary Valenciano from Robredo’s camp. The research objectives are: 1.) What are the contexts behind the songs used and how does it affect the political messaging? 2.) How do the musical components of the music selection send a political message? 3.) How do they compare to each other? This research will answer the first research question by historicizing the songs and examining the backgrounds of the performers of the songs. The second research question will be answered by analyzing the music and the lyrics of the songs. The final research question will then be answered by comparing the ways that the music selections sent a political message.
