Abstract (English)
In My Madness, I Atone is a psychological fiction novella that incorporates elements of this classification such as the exploration of human complexity by the characterization of morally ambiguous personas, maximizing the aesthetic experience of literature through the storytelling, and its objective to form a deep-seated connection between its readers by utilizing a stream of consciousness narration. Taking this into consideration, it also touches upon Noir Fiction, specifically the framework focusing on Southeast Asian works which thematize the supernatural, religion, and colonial legacy. Moreover, the key themes of this literary piece are: “trauma and guilt”— encompasses the life experiences of the main protagonist, “female rage”— encapsulates the unbecoming of the main protagonist, and “atonement”— symbolizes her desire for catharsis.
Given how the novella is character-driven, it primarily revolves around Eris, an artist who is haunted by her trauma and her guilt, both in her subconscious and eventually her reality. These profound feelings are vividly depicted in her paintings which are bound to be spectated as she works her way towards her first ever exhibition. In connection with this, the literary piece aims to take its readers to the alternate sphere that Eris resides in through a third person point of view, likened to a spectator deeply fixated on the paintings that she created using her crimson concoction which is a mixture of red wine, red paint, and her blood. Moreover, it posits the question whether a perpetrator of such grave sin is deserving of empathy leading to her release or whether her existence is reduced to her unbecoming thus she’s bound to spend the rest of her life suffering its consequences.
