Abstract (English)

Desire in Absence is a collection of two one-act plays in English that explores various aspects of space, particularly space as absence. The collection includes the following: (1) Sheltered, which shows a middle-aged couple living in an underground bunker in a nuclear wasteland that argue on whether they should wait for their teenage son to return; and (2) Picture You, a one-woman play featuring a lesbian reminiscing about her relationship with her girlfriend. Both plays feature absent characters as central to the narratives.

Desire, in Lacanian psychoanalysis, is defined by lack. For women and for queer people, desire as lack contemplates their wants in a heteropatriarchal society, in literature and in reality. Even in female and LGBTQ+ exclusive spaces, these systems permeate through them, despite its absence. Drama recreates and reimagines space through the aspect of absence. With black box theatres, theatre spaces became more intimate. It highlights the feeling of being “in a void” to physically and psychologically mimic the absence of an outside world. Absent settings and characters become central to the themes of the plays. Black-Box Theatre utilizing the aspect of absence then presents new interpretations of spatiality, namely how absence and presence affect each other and the trajectory of the story. In this, the one-act play collection aims to present space in Black-Box Theatre plays and emphasizes the role of absence in drama. Additionally, the plays aim to communicate how absent figures such as children and romantic partners lead women and LGBTQ+ into desire, born and amplified by lack.

Desire in Absence ay isang koleksiyon ng dalawang dulang may isang yugto sa Ingles na nagtatalakay sa sari-saring aspekto ng espasyo, lalò na ang espasyo bílang kawalan. Kasáma sa koleksiyong ito ang (1) Sheltered, na nagpapamalas sa isang nakatatandâng mag-asawang nakikipagtalo kung dapat bang hintaying bumalik ang anak nilang binatilyo, hábang naninirahan sa isang subteraneong bunker na nasa nuklear na wasteland; at (2) Picture You, isang dulang one-woman na nagtatampok sa isang lesbiyanang sinasalamisim ang relasyon niya sa kaniyang kasintahan. Itinatampok ng dalawang dula ang mga karakter na liban ngunit sentral sa mga naratibo nila.

Sa pananaw ng sikoanalisis na Lacanian, ipinapakahulugan ng kakulangan ang pagnanasà. Para sa kababaihan at kabadingan, napagninilayan ng pagnanasà-bílang-kakulangan ang kanilang kagustuhan sa lipunang heteropatriyarkal, sa panitikan at sa realidad. Kahit sa mga espasyong pambabae o pang-LGBTQ+ lámang ay namamayagpag ito sa kanila, kahit ba lumiliban. Mulíng nililikha at hinaharaya ng drama ang espasyo sa aspekto ng kawalan. Higit na nagiging matalik ang espasyong panteatro sa mga teatrong black box. Pinagtutuonan nitó ang pakiramdam ng pagsasakawalan upang magagad sa pisikal at sikolohikal na pamamaraan ang kawalan ng daigdig panlabas. Nagiging sentral ang mga lumibang mga tagpuan at karakter sa tema ng mga dula. Ginagámit ng mga Teatrong Black-Box ang aspekto ng kawalan upang maipakíta ang bagong interpretasyon sa espasyalidad, kung paanong umuugnay sa isa’t isa ang kawalan at presensiya tungo sa ikauunlad ng kuwento. Dito, nilalayon ng koleksiyon ng mga dulang may isang yugto ang pagpresenta sa espasyo ng mga dulang Teatrong Black-Box at dinidiinan ang papel ng kawalan sa drama. Dagdag pa rito, nilalayon ng mga dulang ito na maipabatid kung paanong idinudulot ng mga lumibang tauhan gaya ng mga batà at kasintahan sa mga babae at LGBTQ+ ang pagnanasà, na iniluwal at pinalakas ng kakulangan.
