Abstract (English)

The Mis/Reeducation of Shoti is a personal essay collection of my reflections and struggles experiencing physical and mental pain throughout my life, while inscribing pain as a foundational and defining catalyst of growth of the self. Through the craft of pathography, I hope to emphasize vulnerability in writing as a means of revealing the interconnected social and cultural roots of affliction, thereby establishing a personal history of pain and care for the writer. This collection is informed by Rita Charon and Arthur Frank’s phenomenology framework of how bodily sensations and the world are intertwined in the formation of the self in pathography. Writing my stories of pain exposes the writer’s sites of sociological and cultural struggles within one’s community. But amid these experiences is an opportunity to foster virtue, reason, and belief in what it means to be human in the face of pain. The collection will cover four stories of my experiences of physical and mental pain. These essays involve tracing the familial history of my father’s life and his benign tumors and connecting them with my own experience with lipoma, overcoming compulsions brought about by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) through to-do lists, and my struggles with body image and dysmorphia.
