Abstract/Summary

In the 21st century, a resurgence of oral poetry emerged in the Philippines through the form of performance poetry which is commonly referred to as the spoken word due to its virality on social media. Garnering thousands of views from audiences for their spoken word poetry performances and advocacies, the group Words Anonymous was formed in 2014. This study focused on their development as a group and the analysis of their poems. Words Anonymous was able to use spoken word poetry as an artistic lens to the social reality present in the Philippines. Their poems served as reflections of the social and political background through the years. In analyzing their poems from 2015 to 2019, the political themes found were the country’s problem with corruption, Rodrigo Duterte’s War on Drugs, and remembering the Martial Law regime under Ferdinand Marcos Sr. On the other hand, the social themes seen in their poems were the following: the stigma on mental health, the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community, the marginalization and neglect of indigenous groups, radical stereotyping of Muslim individuals, cases of farmer killings, and the social reality for Filipino women.
