Abstract/Summary
The archipelagic nature of the Philippines has led many Filipinos to fishing as their source of income and employment. One prominent province that has embodied this is Cavite, whose identity has become synonymous with its aquaculture specifically, the tahong and talaba industry. These served as essential livelihoods, catering to the protein needs of the people of the coastal towns. Thus, this study is an early attempt to write about their history and development. This study aims to explain how the geographic location of Bacoor Bay became conducive for tahong-talaba farming which eventually led to its popularity and thriving as the biggest mussel producer in the country. This study starts in 1935 during the establishment of the Binakayan Oyster Demonstration Farm in Kawit, Cavite which enabled the industry to develop and eventually thrive. By utilizing the Oral history method, this study is supplemented by the experiences and sentiments of farmers and vendors of tahong-talaba from the surrounding towns. Eventually, the geography of Bacoor Bay also caused the decline of the industry in Cavite, which led to different government support and initiatives to address the challenges and problems. The study concludes in 2019 on the launching of the Manila Bay Clean-up which is a national initiative to rehabilitate the waters of Manila Bay-Bacoor Bay.
