Abstract (English)

Comms Check: Her Voice Unmuted is a documentary that examines how gender disparities may manifest within the Philippine esports broadcasting industry, particularly among female esports talents such as shoutcasters, analysts, and hosts. As esports continues to grow into a global entertainment industry, new career opportunities have emerged beyond professional play. Among these are broadcast talents who serve as the voices and faces that connect players to audiences during tournaments. Despite the increasing visibility of esports, the industry remains perceived as historically male-dominated, raising questions about how women navigate professional opportunities, expectations, and representation within this space.

Through a documentary the researchers explored the lived experiences of female esports broadcast talents in the Philippines. The documentary follows the journey of Miella, an aspiring shoutcaster balancing her responsibilities as a university student while pursuing opportunities within the esports broadcast scene. Alongside her story, the documentary features interviews with both emerging and established esports talents who share their perspectives on career entry, freelancing in the esports gig economy, networking within the community, and the challenges and opportunities they encounter in the industry. The documentation combines esports event footage, recorded interviews, and observational segments that capture the realities of working within esports broadcasting. Through these personal narratives, each segment aims to illustrate the broader landscape of Philippine esports broadcasting. By highlighting the experiences of women within this field, the documentary presents a realistic perspective on the dynamics of gender, opportunity, and representation in the esports community. Ultimately, the project aims to contribute to ongoing conversations about inclusivity within the industry while documenting the voices of those actively shaping its future.
