Abstract (English)

Focusing on the emotional and ethical dimensions of pet ownership in the Philippines, Alaga is a 30-minute short documentary film that explores the unique bond between Filipinos and their companion animals. Focused solely on dogs and cats, the film moves across three thematic explorations that reflect both personal bonds and collective responsibility.

The first delves into the emotional and psychological depth of human-animal connections, highlighting how pets fulfill roles tied to identity, healing, and unconditional love. The second shifts to the realities of neglect, abandonment, and cruelty, questioning why such suffering persists despite our common affection for these animals. The final segment highlights those at the frontlines whose ongoing efforts, though inspiring, reveal the limits of current systems and the urgent need for broader societal involvement.

Shot across both urban and rural contexts, the documentary combines on-site interviews, field footage, and courtesy footage to tell a story that is personal and collective. Ultimately, it urges a deeper reflection on the role of compassion and accountability in shaping a more humane society for animals and those who care for them.
