Abstract (English)

In a home where emotional repression overshadows personal connection, Sa Hapag explores the fragile dynamics of family communication through the eyes of Rina, a young art student striving to paint the perfect family she has never truly known. The film examines how miscommunication, emotional neglect, and the influence of media shape the ways people express love and resolve conflict, asking whether understanding can be rebuilt in silence. Rina confronts the contrasting forms of her parents’ affection, with a father who remains distant and cold, and a mother whose sharp expectations weigh heavily on her. She finds comfort in Aling Lyn, a carinderia owner whose quiet warmth reminds her that genuine presence can heal what silence has fractured. Their bond becomes a quiet metaphor for empathy, showing how listening itself can be an act of love. The film also reflects on how media, whether through violent news or artistic creation, mirrors the chaos within domestic life and becomes a tool for both repression and release. The production of Sa Hapag translates theory into practice through narrative storytelling and visual symbolism. Dim and natural lighting create intimacy and tension, while framed compositions emphasize emotional distance. The personal sound design and original score by a local band highlight the stillness and discomfort that accompany silence. Sa Hapag invites viewers to reflect on how they communicate with those they love and to rediscover what it means to listen, to speak, and to truly be heard at the table.
