Abstract (English)

Fortuno, Miguel R., Ortiz, Aidan Rune O., Rosales, Randall B., Balang Araw: An Exhibit on Radio and TV Archives, Bachelor of Arts (Major in Communication Arts), November 2025, De La Salle University. This thesis highlights two groups of local broadcast media preservationists, namely institutional and independent archivists. The landscape of broadcast media is rapidly changing. Mediums like radio and TV are being replaced by streaming services and short-form video apps. The thesis then serves not just as a “nostalgia trip,” but also as a platform for archivists to publicize their efforts as well as connect to other archivists. The project as a whole is rooted in the archival efforts of the various archivists in the Philippines. Reaching out to various independent and institutional archives in the country, the researchers curated a collection of archival materials being kept alive by these caretakers of media. Taking the form of a physical exhibit, Balang Araw presents this collection through an interactive experience; mirroring the experience of communal TV viewing, or the tactile feeling of inserting a VHS tape inside a player, for example. This experience aims to connect the generations that grew up with this technology with the ones that didn’t, hopefully instilling the importance of the advocacy that archivists are championing. The exhibit ran from November 3 - 8, 2025 in the Learning Commons, found in the 6th floor of Henry Sy Sr. Hall in De La Salle University Manila. It contained loaned archival materials, such as VHS tapes and the digitized versions of archived broadcasts. There was a communal viewing area where visitors could stay and watch these broadcasts at their own leisure. There were QR codes that could be scanned for more information about certain materials. The researchers also made a video walkthrough for those that were unable to visit the exhibit.

Abstract (Filipino)

Fortuno, Miguel R., Ortiz, Aidan Rune O., Rosales, Randall B., Balang Araw: An Exhibit on Radio and TV Archives, Bachelor of Arts (Major in Communication Arts), November 2025, De La Salle University. This experience aims to connect the generations that grew up with this technology with the ones that didn’t, hopefully instilling the importance of the advocacy that archivists are championing.
