Abstract (English)
The study seeks to explore how children’s picture books that focus on difficult topics, such as parental discord, can serve as a therapeutic medium for children who are experiencing the different emotional states of growing up in a broken family, and in helping them understand difficult situations. It aims to understand how illustrations and storytelling can help children
While many picture books exist, there are only a few that openly address sensitive or “taboo” topics that children often struggle to understand. In the Philippines, there are only two books that talk about parental discord, that focus on what happens after the separation of their parents. Bonnie’s Starry Night explores a child’s inner wish for a reunion and her acceptance that healing does not always mean returning to the past.
The children’s picture book is twenty eight (28) pages long that features vibrant, hand-drawn illustrations and text to communicate the emotions that are difficult to express in words. It is written in both English and Filipino. The book was printed and distributed to a partner non-government organization for a book reading event and activity will be conducted with children ages seven (7) to twelve (12) that serve as an avenue to observe how the story resonates with its audience. It is also accessible online so it reaches a broader audience
