Abstract (English)
This thesis presents the narrative short film titled Stable Conditions, which explores the lived experiences of queer Filipino youth navigating self-identity and expression in socially tolerant yet morally conservative culture. Ingrained in the intersection of fictional short features and social commentary, the project shows the line queer Filipino youth must navigate to survive in spaces that appear to accept them but remain implicitly heteronormative.
While the acceptance of LGBTQIA+ community has progressed in many nations, it remains a struggle for young queer individuals to navigate their identity and belonging in gay-tolerant societies such as the Philippines. This study examines the experiences of queer Filipino individuals as they explore their identity and navigate interpersonal relationships. Narrative analysis was employed to analyze interviews with six queer adults, revealing recurring themes of fear of judgment and the need to adjust their behavior at home and at school. Insights from three licensed psychiatrists further contextualized that patterns of code-switching and emotional suppression can impact self-worth, intensify identity confusion, and reinforce internalized shame. The Anggitay’s design in the film reflects this psychological state of partial visibility and longing for authenticity. The study concludes that queer Filipino youth often carry a dual identity shaped by familial and cultural obligation and the desire for acceptance. By combining personal narratives, psychosocial frameworks, and symbolic storytelling, this research highlights the ongoing need for queer-affirming spaces and more nuanced LGBTQ+ representation in the Philippines media and society.
