Abstract/Summary
This project sheds light on the impacts of mother-daughter relationships towards self-identity amongst young women, particularly in the Filipino context. It aims to understand and encapsulate the emotional intricacy and misunderstandings in mother-daughter relationships, demonstrating the difficulty in finding common ground within this relationship. Rather than casting blame, it seeks to promote empathy and present both sides of the mother and daughter. Through a creative exploration in the form of a fictional short film, it centers on the lives of Nadine, a 22-year-old nursing graduate, and Marisol, a mother in her 40s who works as a nurse at a local clinic. The film’s creative treatment includes the representation of Nadine’s inner child as a way to express longing for her mother’s love and acceptance despite navigating the conflict between their individual ambitions and familial expectations.
The short film examines the differences and similarities between mothers and daughters from Nadine’s point of view, as well as the influence of traditional and contemporary Filipino values on their relationship. In the Philippine context, it also highlights the need to overcome gender expectations and generational differences in order to promote a better understanding of mother-daughter relationships. Inviting audiences—especially young Filipino daughters—gives them a chance to reflect on their own connections with their mothers and examine their identity and development.
