Abstract/Summary
The graphic novel is a standalone work that combines the medium of illustration and photography to convey the story. The narrative is centered around Olivia, or Liv, a 22-year-old woman who suddenly discovers a little girl who takes her on a series of adventures that help her tap into her inner child. Liv, who lives her repetitive and tiring life, is portrayed as a dull and hollow illustration and slowly develops into a naturalistic-rendered being with the little girl's help. Traditional and digital art were utilized in the creation of the illustrations and paintings, and photographs were taken and served as the character models and background of the scenes.
The graphic novel was inspired by the recent trends in social media, specifically by young adults who engage in activities often revolving around retail therapy as a means to heal their inner child, evident in the hashtags “#innerchild” and “#innerchildhealing.” Moreover, it is also inspired by the authors' experiences in the pursuit of healing their own inner child.
Childhood experiences are essential to development and influence one’s current self (Assagiolo and Weston qtd. by Sjöblom 18). Thus, negative childhood experiences and environments can lead to complications in one’s adulthood. The project touches on the concept of the inner child and the concept of retail therapy as a means of healing some negative emotions from a wounded inner child. Retail therapy, though often misconceived as compulsive shopping behavior, is the act of engaging in retail, such as shopping, browsing, interacting with salespeople, and purchasing to relieve negative emotions. (Lee 5 and Noh & Hasan 181).
