Abstract/Summary

Dichloromethane extract of the leaves of Macaranga tanarius (Linn.) Muell.-Arg. has been investigated leading to the isolation of chlorophyll a, chlorophyllide a and polyprenol. The structure of chlorophyll a and its derivative were confirmed by spectroscopic methods including NMR, IR and UV analyses while the structure of polyprenol was determined by comparison of its NMR spectral data with those reported in the literature. The chlorophyll compounds were also evaluated for their potential antimicrobial properties utilizing in vitro assays. Agar well diffusion assay results indicated that chlorophyll a exhibited low activity against P. aeruginosa and C. albicans and was found ineffective against S. aureus, B. subtilis, E. coli, T. mentagrophytes and A. niger. Its derivative- chlorophyllide a showed low activity against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, C. albicans and T. mentagrophytes but no inhibition in the growth of B. subtilis and A. niger were observed.
