Abstract/Summary

OSIGSI (full name was withheld as requested by the company owners) is among hundreds of security and general services agencies in the country. The contracting and subcontracting industry encompasses a variety of service offerings, which includes OSIGSIs core operations.

The very challenging economic landscape in the country forces firms to identify business process that contributes to sustaining competitive advantage and achievement of strategic objectives. Non-critical support functions and value chain activities are chosen to be sourced out to vendors/contractors. General Services and Security Agencies are among the vendors/contractors, which offer non-critical support activities to client firms.

Security Services and Utility Services are separate businesses one is not related to the other. Each has its own challenges, competitors, necessary employee training, equipment, and supplies. Of the two, Security Services is the most organized.

Republic Act No. 5487 regulates the organization and operation of private detective, watchman, and security guard agencies in the Philippines. The private security service industry in the country has been on the upswing over the past five years with the rising incidences of terrorist bombings and crimes against private and public properties. Based on the Business Profiles 2004- 2005: Top 7000 Corporations, the top 25 private security service corporations in the country posted a Total Revenue of P3.1B in 2004, while Net Income After Tax stood at P111M.

The degree of difficulty in isolating companies engaged in the utility/janitorial services in the same source book (Business Profiles, 2004-2005) is higher. Most companies are engaged in providing General Services, which includes Janitorial, Messengerial, Construction, and Plumbing services among others. Unlike the Security Services, it is free from interference by the government. It is not monitored by any organization or government agency. However, this may also be a source of disadvantage. The industry has no set service standards. In its absence, some companies have resorted to acquiring ISO Certifications or coming up with Training Modules that are TESDA certified.

Based on the Business Profiles 2004-2005: Top 7000 Corporations, the top 20 service corporations in the country posted a Total Revenue of P2.08B in 2004 while Net Income After Tax was P66.2M.

OSIGSI with a Gross Income of P 139,311,678 was ranked 3790 down from the 2003 rank of 3714 in spite of the increase in income. 2003 Gross Income stood at P 115,913,000.
