Abstract/Summary

This study analyze Rodrigo Duterte and Manny Pacquiao as spectacles that continue the hegemony of masculinity. This critical analysis will involve semiotics and critical discourse analysis through psychoanalysis and hegemonic masculinity. Key objects of analysis are the different manifestations of masculinity expressed by the two spectacles. These manifestations mainly involve gutter language, symbolic violence, physical violence and their images as portrayed in the public. I argue through this thesis that the concept of manhood or pagkalalaki in the Philippines has already changed from Maginoo pero medyo bastos to its perverse reverse - Bastos pero medyo maginoo.
