Abstract/Summary
Exporting of coconut is one of the most important industries in the country, providing around 5.49 billion pesos in income. However, emerging pest species, including Aspidiotus rigidus, have threatened the coconut industry in the Philippines. Application of systemic neonicotinoids such as dinotefuran and thiamethoxam are being used to combat A rigidus and other sucking insects. However, with both of them being broad spectrum insecticide, they both have the potential to not only kill target species but also affect non target species; such as Comperiella calauanica, the biological control agent to A. rigidus. This study aimed to determine the lethal effects of thiamethoxam (Actara ®) and dinotefuran (Starkle SG ® ) to C. calauanica. Based on the results, it seems that dinotefuran and thiamethoxam have lethal effects on C. calauanica because of the observed neurotoxic effects and mortality after 2 hours exposure to the neonicotinoids.
