Abstract/Summary
At the height of the Catholic Church's land-grabbing activities during the 18th century, a young sacristan is caught in a growing tension between the Dominican Order and the revolting inquilinos. Hearing a call from the spirits of the woods, he is torn between fulfilling his role in the church and obeying a pact he has made with the anitos when he was still a child. Meanwhile, the cafres are beginning to intervene deeper and deeper in human affairs while the mysterious disappearance of the anitos from the lives of the natives plunge the people into an ordeal of abandonment.
