Abstract/Summary

The Association of Senior Citizens of Barangay Merville (ASCBM) is a non-profit organization under the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) that is responsible for helping Merville senior citizen residents (SCRs) improve their welfare and health. Various medical and livelihood programs for SCRs are offered by ASCBM to support their well-being and promote longevity.
The communication audit revealed that the top health concern in Barangay Merville is diabetes and Sito All-top had the most cases of the illness. This influenced the thesis to focus on the said health concern and sitio. It was also revealed tha SCRs face uncertainties about diabetes which make it even harder for them to manage it.  it. There were also multiple diabetes complications that although they often experienced, they were not aware was caused by diabetes.
In order to understand the organizational problem, Patent-Centered Communication (PCC) by Epstein and Street (2007) and the Six-Function Model by Tai, Barr, and Woodward-Kron (2019) were used as a guide to address and avoid future patient uncertainties. It was necessary to modify the flow of medical consultations and interaction between ASCBM members and SCRs in order to help the latter manage their diabetes.
To address the organizational communication problem, a health talk or event was conducted. This was supplemented with an event manual for ASCBM so that they may sustain the intervention in the future. They were also provided with a PCC Manual to act as a guide for members and doctors to more effectively communicate with SCRs.
