Abstract/Summary

Image Enhancement and Enlargement system is a device capable of manipulating a captured image to improve its quality and visual appearance. It is composed of two components namely the hardware and the software. The hardware component is a frame grabber composed of a flash six-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), 64K-Byte Capture Memory, Address Decoder and Address Generators. It functions by capturing images from a video camera or any standard NTSC input, digitizing these pictures and then storing them into a file. The software component of the system performs enhancement and enlargement module manipulates the grabbed picture by using various enhancement algorithms. It can filter out noises and distortions, and emphasize other parts like the edges and intensity. On the other hand, the enlargement module is capable of magnifying the specified area of the image according to different levels of amplification. Lastly, the images can be stored and printed. The results of the study will clearly be of help in different law-enforcement agencies in our country because of the system's ability to process evidences taken from any standard NTSC input. It is also suitable for surveillance activities. However, there are certain limitations and constraints in the system. These are further discussed in Chapter 1.
