Abstract/Summary

Female human beings will reach different phase in their reproductive system that would signify their development, namely: menarche, pregnancy and menopause. Menarche signals the beginning of a girl’s fertility. When a female’s egg cell is fertilized, a woman reaches the stage of pregnancy. For an interval of nine months, a woman’s body will adjust accordingly to nurture the growing life inside of her. As women come to age, their bodies’ hormone production will decrease and thus arrive at the period of menopause.

The study contains research on these three stages as well as a pregnancy complication called cervical insufficiency, defined as the inability of the cervix to carry a growing fetus inside the womb. It is a relatively uncommon complication, as it occurs in only up to 2% of all pregnancies (Norwitz 2012). The proponents explore the biological, social, and psychological changes and effects that these events bring in a short feature film entitled Siklo. The story focuses on three estranged family members: a boyish teenager named Cora, her hardworking pregnant mother Julie, and her vain grandmother Evelyn. Their lives are shaken up when Cora gets her period, Julie finds out she has cervical insufficiency, and Evelyn reaches menopause. In turn of these events, not only do their bodies mature, but also their relationships toward one another.
