Abstract/Summary

A limnological study of Sampaloc Lake in San Pablo City, Laguna was done from April to July of 1992. The physico-chemical aspects of the water were analyzed. Estimation of phytoplankton density and chlorophyll content were also done. Fish (tilapia) that were collected were subjected to descriptive analysis based on their body dimensions (length, width, and body breadth) and feeding habits. Relative growth and production were also indicated. These studies were done to determine their relationship with each other. The study showed that water quality parameters affected each other. Phytoplankton density was prevalent inside the fish pen compared to that of the outside. Inside the pen, a mean of 198 ind./cu. cm. was observed while outside, a mean of 158 ind./cu.cm. was obtained. Fish growth showed bigger and longer dimensions for the summer seasons with values of 208 cm., 76 cm., 33.5 cm. for length, width, and body breadth respectively compared to 199 cm., 73 cm., and 26.5 cm. for the months of June and July. Fish productivity was correlated with that of the fish biomass such that a bigger biomass would mean higher productivity. Results obtained were affected by both site- and time-related changes as shown by the abrupt decline in fish population in the lake for the months of June and July.
