Abstract/Executive Summary
The need for lockdown procedures has become a high-priority concern in both the international and local contexts. Various schools have experienced student-safety issues due to violent external threats, highlighting the need for proper implementation of security measures. While several policies on school safety are currently enforced in the Philippines, questions regarding the implementation of lockdown measures in schools persist. This study aimed to evaluate teachers’ understanding of lockdown procedures in a private K-12 institution in Calamba City, Laguna, and assess their readiness to implement these protocols during emergency situations. A qualitative research design was used, employing structured interviews as the data collection method. Seven teachers from the research local participated. The findings revealed inconsistencies in the teachers’ understanding of their school’s lockdown procedures. They also expressed varying confidence levels in enforcing classroom emergency plans. Communication during emergency situations was determined to be through the school’s public address system and alternative online messaging platforms. Despite having general knowledge of the procedures, the teachers underscored the need for clearer guidelines, additional orientations, and regular drills. These findings highlight certain gaps in the teachers’ preparedness and warrant clearer guidelines and improved implementation of lockdown procedures. Future researchers could look into various aspects of school lockdown measures by assessing their effectiveness and identifying possible interventions that are fit to the local context.
