Abstract

Using a variety of collection assessment methods, this article attempts to (1) identify the strengths, weaknesses and imbalances in the Science collections of the De La Salle University Libraries, (2) determine how successful it is in acquiring and providing access to Science information sources, (3) examine the usage of Science collections, and (4) investigate the value of Science titles in relation to its usage. Collection-based approaches, e.g. collection mapping, list checking, comparative analysis against peer libraries, and user-centered approaches, e.g. usage and cost-benefit analyses, were utilized. Findings showed that the DLSU Libraries' Science collection is strong in Mathematics and Natural History-Biology and weak in Human Anatomy and Astronomy. Online journals comprised the majority of the 2008-2013 Science publications. Using Choice and YBP US Core Titles, the DLSU Libraries was not successful in acquiring recent Science books. Usage of Science holdings is consistently decreasing over the years, except for e-books.
