Abstract

To determine the extent of the role played by strategy use in comprehending a text, the present study examined two 2nd language learners' strategy use. Data were culled from recall protocol activities and summary tasks accomplished by the participants. Results indicate that various cognitive strategies like using prior knowledge, making inferences, and asking questions while reading were used by the participants to understand the meaning of words and ideas. Prompted cues also helped elicit prior knowledge and allowed students to recognize reading difficulties. Such findings emphasize the need to adapt and adopt various teaching strategies and learning tasks in order to accommodate the different reading styles of learners.
