Abstract
The study generally aimed to analyze 10 unscripted monologues in terms of cohesion pertaining to the use of conjunctions and lexical cohesion. Specifically, it aimed to identify instances of conjunctive relations and compare them in terms of internal and external functions/location. Also, it examined the instances of the different forms of lexical cohesion namely, repetition, synonyms, and collocations. A total of 10 transcripts (Appendix A-J) of unscripted monologues from the Philippine English Data for the International Corpus of English project (Bautista, Dayag and Lising, 1999) were used as data in the analysis. The findings revealed the preponderance of Causal and Additive conjunctions which suggests the possibility for more instances of cause-effect relation and coordination. These features may be considered as linguistic devices in the production and organization of coherent monologues. As to lexical cohesion, it was found out that repetition accounted for factors such as the need for emphasis, self-correction and even lack of an appropriate term to use. All these instances of repetition may be linked to the direct involvement of the speakers in the creation of a coherent monologue.
