Abstract
The Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Government of Japan, through the financing institution Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had conducted Earthquake Office Impact Reduction for Metropolitan Manila in 2004. This undertaking is popularly known as the Metropolitan Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS) with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) as the implementing agencies. The study was made to make the Metro Manila authorities and its local government units be aware and prepared for the adverse impact of high seismic risk in the development of Metropolitan Manila and on the lives and properties of its constituents. This paper is being presented in all Disaster Preparedness workshops being conducted by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) of the National Capital Region (NCR) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). The Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE) and the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) has an active memorandum of understanding since 2005 and part of this collaboration is for ASP to provide technical information regarding building structures and other infrastructures. The paper discusses about the seismology of the Philippines, earthquake and wind zone maps of the Philippines, code provisions regarding design of structures, indicators of vulnerable buildings and hazard mitigation.
