Abstract
This study discussed pertinent design parameters of hydraulic systems in horizontal axis wind turbine. Hydraulic systems are used to properly control the yaw brake, rotor brake and rotor lock systems during yaw movement of nacelle, to suppress the rotor in the event of complete failure of aerodynamic braking system and during maintenance work, respectively. System design requirements for hydraulic power unit as per IEC 61400-1 and GL guidelines are also presented.
Hydraulic system component arrangement such as accumulator, pressure relief valves and hydraulic pump are evaluated using HyPneu software. FluidSim software was also used in rotor lock system to simulate the event of pressure loss during power failure. The results indicate that power system design tools such as HyPneu and FluidSim software could resolve hydraulic system problems prior to construction.
