Abstract/Summary
Teaching scientific attitudes, traits, methods and concepts to a classroom who are not even interested nor curious is one of the many common classroom challenges that an educator has to face. To some, it might seem usual and/or normal, but this could lead to something all educators’ major distress - students’ failure. With that, the researcher opted to introduce the use of historical vignettes in the institution of Espiritu Santo Parochial School of Manila, Inc.,. This action research employs a qualitative approach of research, integrating historical vignettes in teaching Genetics among grade 9 students. There were three formats of the historical vignettes that students can choose from, these are: textual, comics strip and digital story book adapted in YouTube. Most of the students’ population preferred to use the digital story book, this created a huge impact towards the students’ interest. During the implementation stage of the study, it revealed a deeper conceptual understanding in science as the students displayed a better academic performance and increased engagement manifested in their attendance, online classroom participation and even turning on their cameras in their respective science classes upon using the historical vignette as their motivation. Historical vignettes played an important role as it used as a helpful tool in bringing back the interest of students in science, specifically Genetics.
