Abstract (English)
In answer to the need for indigenous psychometric instruments normed in the local context, this study developed and validated the Filipino Emotional Intelligence Test (FEIT). Founded on the postulates of Daniel Goleman’s framework of emotional competencies, an initial pool of 224 items was administered in 2023 to 835 employees from private, public, and non-governmental organizations. Social desirability screening and iterative exploratory factor analysis (EFA) yielded a 30-item, four-factor model representing Achievement Tenacity (Factor 1), Socioemotional Acuity (Factor 2), Adaptive Self-Governance (Factor 3) and Relational Competence (Factor 4). The model explained 59.3% of the total variance, with Factors 1-4 accounting for 21.8%, 17.3%, 10.9%, and 9.4%, respectively, and item loadings ranging from .42 to .94. Predictive validity was assessed through standard multiple regression using 2023 factor scores as predictors and performance ratings for 2024–2025 as the criterion. Of the 835 initial respondents, 310 with available ratings were included. The model was significant, R = .25, R² = .064, F(4, 305) = 5.19, p < .001, though no single factor uniquely predicted performance (ps > .18). In the model controlling for organizational type and employment status, the predictors explained 41.3% of the variance in performance (R² = .413, F(4, 305) = 53.65, p < .001), with private sector employment emerging as a significant negative predictor (B = −0.86, p < .001), while employment status did not significantly predict performance (ps = .163 to .672). Although the predictive effects were modest, overall findings provide evidence of sound factorial structure and contextual validity, establishing FEIT as a culturally grounded, psychometrically sound measure of emotional intelligence in Philippine workplaces.
