Abstract (English)

While prevailing discussions on animal captivity often emphasize ecological or welfare-based concerns, this study presents a phenomenological-ethical critique of zoos, drawing inspiration from Emmanuel Levinas’s philosophy. Rooted in Levinas’s concept of a responsibility that emerges from the face-to-face encounter with a vulnerable and irreducible Other, this study investigates how zoos fundamentally disrupt this ethical relation. It argues that the zoo, by its very design, is an anti-ethical apparatus that forecloses genuine moral engagement through its inherent anthropocentrism, its reduction of animals to objects of display, and its physical and symbolic architecture, which blocks the possibility of a face-to-face encounter. Finally, this study argues that zoos are not merely sites of physical confinement, but are more profoundly spaces of ethical erasure, where the capacity of nonhuman animals to appear as Others who command moral responsibility is systematically silenced.

Habang ang mga umiiral na talakayan tungkol sa pagkakakulong ng mga hayop ay madalas na nagbibigay-diin sa mga usaping ekolohikal o nakabatay sa kapakanan, ang pag-aaral na ito ay naghahain ng isang pagsusuring penomenolohikal-etikal sa mga palahayupan, na hango sa pilosopiya ni Emmanuel Levinas. Nakaugat sa konsepto ni Levinas ng responsibilidad na lumilitaw mula sa harap-harapang pagtatagpo sa isang di-matutumbasang “Iba.” Sinisiyasat ng pag-aaral na ito kung paano lubusang sinisira ng mga palahayupan ang relasyong etikal na ito. Iginigiit nito na ang palahayupan, sa mismong disenyo nito, ay isang kagamitang humahadlang sa tunay na pakikipag-ugnayang moral sa pamamagitan ng likas na antroposentrismo nito at ng pagpapababa nito sa mga hayop bilang mga bagay na pantanghal. At ng pisikal at simbolikong arkitektura nito na pinipigilan ang posibilidad ng isang harap-harapang pagtatagpo. Bilang pangwakas, nangangatwiran ang pag-aaral na ito na ang mga palahayupan ay hindi lamang mga lugar ng pisikal na pagkakakulong, kundi ay mas malalim na antas, mga espasyo ng etikal na pagbubura, kung saan ang kakayahan ng mga hayop na lumitaw bilang mga “Iba” na nag-uutos ng responsibilidad na moral ay sistematikong pinatatahimik.
