Abstract/Summary
Though not exhaustively studied or highlighted, literature has always been capable of memorializing experiences of crisis as seen in texts’ discussions and presentations of the world’s history of wars, plagues, pandemics, political turmoil, natural calamities, environmental degradation, and others (Roma 3). The study thus suggests that humans can turn to literature and not just hard-core sciences or policymaking in moments of crisis and distress. Specifically, the lyric poems of National Artist for Literature Cirilo F. Bautista, in their visible relevance, beautiful form, and their ability to affect readers emotionally and intellectually, may be used as materials for students to learn and practice values, skills, and mindsets needed to better respond to experiences of crises whether they are personal, communal, national, or global.
To assist in using the lyric poems of Cirilo F. Bautista as texts that could be taught in times of crisis and to learn crisis and crisis management skills, the study presents a coursebook-type material that contains 1) a working collection of reference materials on Cirilo F. Bautista that could be used in teaching his lyric poems in times of crisis and even across different themes and points of focus, 2) ten (10) teaching modules on selected lyric poems of Cirilo F. Bautista with a focus on teaching them during times of crisis by highlighting crisis themes and crisis management values and skills, and 3) critical notes on analyzing, reading, and teaching of Cirilo F. Bautista’s lyric poems in times of and about crises.
This thesis intends to (1) situate the importance of teaching the lyric poems of Cirilo F. Bautista in times of crisis, (2) provide supporting materials in the teaching of Cirilo F. Bautista’s lyric poems, and (3) share teaching plans specifically approaches, strategies, practices, and experiences that may serve as supplemental texts in the teaching of the lyric poems of Cirilo F. Bautista.
The coursebook is inspired by the Modern Language Association of America’s (MLA's) Approaches to Teaching World Literature Series. Its production and writing of the modules are also primarily influenced by various strategies and approaches in teaching literature and understanding lyric poems, particularly that of Elaine Showalter, Gémino H. Abad, Mutluk Konuk Blasing, and Edward Hirsch. The crisis-sensitive pedagogies applied in the composed teaching plans follow the practices of Elizabeth Ammons and Sofia Ahlberg.
