Abstract (English)

The primary objective of this study is to historicize the four active tobacco farmers' cooperatives in the province of Isabela: the Christian Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative in the municipality of Cabagan; the Sta. Isabel Sur Tobacco Farmers Credit Cooperative in the City of Ilagan; the Bagong Sikat Tobacco Growers Credit Cooperative in the municipality of San Mateo; and the Quezon Isabela Tobacco Growers Agriculture Cooperative in the municipality of Quezon. At present, these cooperatives are recognized as fundamental pillars of the province’s tobacco industry and as crucial contributors to the advancement of its agricultural economy.

Employing the historical method as the principal research approach, this study examines: (1) the geographical and topographical characteristics of Isabela and its suitability for tobacco cultivation; (2) the key developments that shaped the rise of the tobacco industry in the province and led to the formation of cooperatives; (3) the transformations that have occurred in the structure of the tobacco industry and in the economic conditions of farmers since the establishment of these cooperatives; (4) the broader implications of the tobacco industry for the daily lives and socioeconomic conditions of the people of Isabela; and (5) the critical roles played by the cooperatives, along with the farmers and laborers, in the province’s local history.

Ultimately, this research seeks not only to narrate the historical development of tobacco cooperatives in Isabela but also to underscore their significant contributions to the broader narrative of the province’s economic history.

Layunin ng pag-aaral na ito ang pagsasakasaysayan ng apat na aktibong kooperatiba ng mga magsasaka ng tabako sa lalawigan ng Isabela: ang Christian Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative sa bayan ng Cabagan, Sta. Isabel Sur Tobacco Farmers Credit Cooperative sa Lungsod ng Ilagan, Bagong Sikat Tobacco Growers Credit Cooperative sa bayan ng San Mateo, at Quezon Isabela Tobacco Growers Agriculture Cooperative sa bayan ng Quezon. Sa kasalukuyan, kinikilala ang mga kooperatibang ito bilang pangunahing haligi ng industriya ng tabako sa lalawigan, at mahalagang salik sa pag-unlad ng kabuhayang agrikultural ng mamamayan.

Gamit ang metodong historikal bilang pangunahing pamamaraan ng pananaliksik, tinalakay sa pag-aaral na ito ang sumusunod: (1) ang heograpikal at topograpikal na katangian ng Isabela at ang angkop nitong kalagayan para sa pagtatanim ng tabako; (2) ang mahahalagang pangyayari na humubog sa pag-usbong ng industriya ng tabako sa lalawigan, na nagbigay daan sa pagtatatag ng mga kooperatiba; (3) ang mga pagbabagong naganap sa estruktura ng industriya ng tabako at sa kabuhayan ng mga magsasaka mula nang maitatag ang mga kooperatiba; (4) ang malawakang implikasyon ng industriya ng tabako sa buhay ng mga mamamayan sa Isabela; at (5) ang mahalagang papel na ginampanan ng mga kooperatiba, pati na ng mga magsasaka at manggagawa sa kasaysayang lokal ng lalawigan.

Sa kabuuan, layunin ng pananaliksik na ito na hindi lamang mailarawan ang kasaysayan ng mga kooperatiba ng tabako sa Isabela, kundi maitampok din ang kanilang ambag sa mas malawak na naratibo ng kasaysayang pang-ekonomiya ng lalawigan.
