Abstract (English)
This study aimed to examine the Leni–Kiko murals as visual texts and as political and public spaces through which the people’s aspirations were articulated during the 2022 elections. The primary data consisted of Leni–Kiko murals located in the seven cities of Cavite. These were analyzed using Guillermo’s Four Planes of Analysis, which encompasses the basic semiotic, iconic, contextual, and evaluative planes. Habermas’s concept of the public sphere was also employed to understand how the murals became sites of public expression, participation, and political discourse. To deepen the contextualization and evaluation of the murals, key informant interviews were conducted with volunteers who were directly involved in their planning, creation, and dissemination.
The analysis revealed that the Leni–Kiko murals served not only as visual materials for the electoral campaign but also as channels through which citizens expressed their social and political aspirations. By examining the colors, lines, figures, symbols, texts, compositions, locations, and volunteers’ narratives, the study identified five forms of collective aspiration: (1) honest and accountable governance; (2) recognition of the dignity and welfare of ordinary citizens; (3) hope for humane, inclusive, and compassionate leadership; (4) a peaceful and humane electoral culture; and (5) bayanihan, or communal solidarity, and collective action in future elections.
The study also found that the walls on which the murals were painted served not merely as physical sites for campaigning. Through collective creation, they became spaces for volunteerism, interaction, the expression of political convictions, and the formation of collective hope. Nevertheless, the volunteers encountered challenges related to insufficient materials and funding, limited time, fatigue, coordination among participants, the search for suitable spaces, community acceptance, and the risks of criticism, intimidation, erasure, or damage to the murals. These challenges also exposed the tension between citizens’ collective action and candidate-centered politics.
These challenges yielded important lessons for the electoral movement. The experience of creating the murals demonstrated that volunteerism becomes more meaningful when it is grounded in clear objectives, sound organization, an equitable division of responsibilities, concern for participants’ safety, and respect for diverse perspectives. It also indicated that bayanihan and citizen participation should not end on election day. Instead, the relationships, skills, and political awareness developed through the movement must be sustained and expanded to serve as a foundation for stronger collective action in future elections and in addressing other social issues.
The study established that the Leni–Kiko murals were significant visual texts and political spaces that brought together art, volunteerism, public discourse, and electoral participation. As pink-hued images, traces of collective action, and expressions of an envisioned future, the murals documented not only the people’s aspirations but also the challenges, limitations, and lessons of an electoral movement that sought honest, accountable, humane, and inclusive governance.
