Abstract/Summary

A culture of Brothers beyond the borders challenges religious Brothers of a religious congregation in the East Asia District (DLSB) to explore new ways to foster knowledge, attitudes, and skills toward responding to work beyond the Brother country of origin. This study analyzed the effects of international volunteer exposure for three (3) postulants in four (4) cities in Thailand where the school system is present. The needs assessment results obtained through a literature review, survey questionaries, and interviews with the postulants and formators in Thailand showed that a culture of Brothers beyond borders has been a recurrent theme for the last seven (7) years and with an emphasis on taking action to foster the international aspect availability to work in other schools of the network outside the place of origin of the in the last two (2) years. Although there were some actions taken at other higher stages of the formation, the needs assessment suggested exploring the effects of having international volunteer exposure at the first stage of religious training to assess further the effect of their perception of culture beyond borders and the correlation to the perseverance in their religious vocation. The researcher created the Thai International Exposure, a volunteer program to respond to data collected based on the expectancy theory perspective of volunteerism. Through open-ended questionaries, session meetings, and personal interviews before, during, and after the volunteer program, the postulants expressed a positive influence of the exposure in their perceived disposition toward working in another country and perseverance in their religious vocation. This action research offers an improved postulancy formation plan to foster a Brothers culture beyond borders. Further studies are recommended since this is the first time this volunteer exposure has been implemented in the postulancy program.
