Abstract (Filipino)

Ang pag-aaral na ito ay nagsusuri ng sining ng drag bilang isang anyo ng ekspresyon, identidad, at pakikibaka ng mga drag queen sa mga piling bar at club sa Lungsod Quezon at Pasig. Sa pamamagitan ng obserbasyon sa mga bar, kwentong buhay, at tematikong naratibo ng mga drag queen, sinuri kung paanong ang mga bar at club gaya ng Rampa Nightclub, Rapture Café Bar, KRIB+ Nightclub, O Bar, at Spectroom ay nagsisilbing larangan ng aliw, politika, at komunidad. Ipinakita ng pag-aaral na ang drag ay isang makabuluhang sining at penomena ng popular na kultura ng Pilipinas na nagsisilbing tinig ng LGBTQIA+ community at tagapagpahayag ng kanilang karanasan at paninindigan. Lumabas na ang mga pagtatanghal ng mga drag queen ay hindi lamang para sa libangan kundi nagsisilbing pahayag ng kanilang pakikibaka sa diskriminasyon at pagtanggap sa sarili. Sa mga bar at club na ito, nabubuo ang mga espasyong nagbibigay ng kalayaan sa mga bakla upang maipahayag ang kanilang pagkakakilanlan at malikhaing kakayahan. Gayunpaman, nananatili ang mga hamon tulad ng pang-aabuso, diskriminasyon, at kawalan ng benepisyo para sa mga manananghal na naglilimita sa ganap na pagiging ligtas ng mga espasyong ito. Sa kabila nito, ang mga bar ay nanatiling mahalagang institusyon ng pagkakaisa at suporta sa komunidad ng mga drag queen.

Batay sa teorya ng Rampa ni Rowell Madula, tinalakay ng pag-aaral ang drag bilang proseso ng pagbuo ng espasyong bakla sa pamamagitan ng pagbuo ng ligtas na espasyo, pagpapahayag ng mensaheng politikal at sosyal, at malayang pagpapahayag ng identidad na sumasagisag sa malikhaing paglikha ng mundong nagbibigay-boses at lakas sa mga bakla. Pinalawak pa ito sa pagbuo ng pantasya na nagsisimula sa preparasyon sa pagtatanghal, aktwal na pagtatanghal sa entablado, at partisipasyon ng mga manonood. Sa kabuuan, ipinapakita ng pag-aaral na ang drag ay isang puwersang kultural at radikal na sining na nagtataguyod ng pag-asa, paglikha, at paglaban. Sa pagtaas ng bisibilidad ng mga drag queen sa mga bar, unibersidad, telebisyon, at digital na midya, patuloy nitong hinahamon ang mga nakasanayang pananaw sa kasarian at nagsisilbing kasangkapan ng paglaya at pagbabago sa lipunang Pilipino.

Abstract (English)

This study examines the art of drag as a form of expression, identity, and struggle among drag queens in selected bars and clubs in Quezon City and Pasig City. Through observations, life stories, and the thematic narratives of drag queens, the study analyzes how venues such as Rampa Nightclub, Rapture Café Bar, KRIB+ Nightclub, O Bar, and Spectroom function as spaces of entertainment, politics, and community. The findings show that drag is a significant art form and a phenomenon of Philippine popular culture that serves as a voice for the LGBTQIA+ community and a means of articulating their lived experiences and convictions. It emerges that drag performances are not merely for entertainment but also operate as statements of resistance against discrimination and as affirmations of self acceptance. Within these bars and clubs, spaces are created that allow queer individuals the freedom to express their identities and creative capacities. However, challenges such as verbal and physical abuse, discrimination, and the lack of benefits for performers persists, limiting the complete safety of these spaces. Despite these conditions, bars remain as vital institutions of unity and support within the drag and queer community.

Grounded in Rowell Madula’s Rampa theory, the study discusses drag as a process of constructing queer spaces through the creation of safe spaces, the expression of political and social messages, and freedom to express identity that symbolizes the transformation of the society that gives voice and empowerment to the queer community. It further expands this into the construction of fantasy that begins with performance preparation, continues with the actual stage performance, and cultimates in audience participation. Lastly, the study demonstrates that drag is a cultural force and a radical art form that advances hope, creativity, and resistance. With the increasing visibility of drag queens in bars, universities, television, and digital media, drag continues to challenge conventional notions of gender and serves as a tool for liberation and transformation in Philippine society.
