Abstract (English)

Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit Mission constitutes the foundational attitude that animates Jesuit-lay partnership. Lay partners share in the mission and live the spirituality. This dissertation is an attempt to generate particular notions and understandings as experienced by lay partners in Jesuit higher educational institutions in the Philippines. Guided by the qualitative approach as introduced by grounded theorist Barney Glaser, the lay partners’ concept and understanding of partnership and of being a partner, as lived in higher education, were generated systematically from field data, then analyzed and coded using the constant comparison method. Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit Mission in Jesuit higher education institutions in the Philippines, as the core category, emerged as the participants’ main concern. This theoretical construct evolved from five interrelated and substantive sub-core categories, namely: 1) Becoming Jesuit-Lay Partners in a Formative Process amid Contextual Challenges, 2) Identifying with and Embracing the Jesuit Mission as Lay Partners, 3) Embracing the Ignatian Spirituality as Jesuit-Lay Partners, 4) Appreciating the Ignatian Pedagogical Foundation of Jesuit-Lay Partnership, and 5) Appropriating the Institution's Mission and Spirituality as Jesuit-Lay Partners. The study established five essential elements through which lay partners embrace the Ignatian Spirituality and live the Jesuit educational mission. These elements capture the experiences, concerns, and insights about Jesuit-Lay partnership of forty-two lay partners. Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit Mission offers a leadership formation model and a framework for developing educational policies and programs for lay leaders, faculty, and staff members in higher education, especially in Jesuit schools where partnership in mission is integral to institutional identity and practice.

Ang Pagyakap sa Ispiritwalidad ni San Ignacio at sa Misyon ng nga Heswita ang bumubuo sa saligang disposisyong nagbibigay-buhay sa pakikipag-ugnayang Heswita-Layko. Nakikibahagi ang mga layko sa misyon at isinasabuhay ang ispiritwalidad sa kanilang personal at propesyonal na buhay. Nilalayon ng disertasyong ito na buuin ang mga tiyak na kaisipan at pag-unawa hinggil sa ganitong pakikipag-ugnayan batay sa karanasan ng mga laykong katuwang sa mga institusyong Heswitang pangmasmataasang edukasyon sa Pilipinas. Gamit ang kwalitatibong metodolohiyang ipinakilala ng grounded theorist na si Barney Glaser, sistematikong nabuo ang mga konsepto at pag-unawa ng mga layko tungkol sa pakikipag-ugnayan—at sa pagiging katuwang—bilang buhay na karanasan sa masmataasang edukasyon. Ang mga datos mula sa larangan ay sinuri at kinodigo gamit ang constant comparative method.

Lumabas bilang pangunahing kalinga o sentral na usapin ng mga kalahok ang core category na Pagyakap sa Ispiritwalidad ni San Ignacio at sa Misyon ng mga Heswita sa mga Institusyong Hewsita ng Masmataasang Edukasyon sa Pilipinas. Mula rito ay umusbong ang limang magkakaugnay at substantibong sub-core categories: (1) Pagiging Katuwang na Heswita-Layko sa Isang Pampormasyong Proseso sa Gitna ng mga Kontekstuwal na Hamon; (2) Pagkilala at Pagyakap sa Misyon ng mga Heswita bilang mga Laykong Katuwang; (3) Pagyakap sa Ispiritwalidad ni San Ignacio bilang mga Katuwang na Heswita-Layko; (4) Pagpapahalaga sa Pedagohiyang Ignaciana bilang Pundasyon ng Pakikipag-ugnayang Heswita-Layko; at (5) Pag-aangkin sa Misyon at Ispiritwalidad ng Institusyon bilang mga Katuwang na Layko.

Natukoy ng pag-aaral ang limang mahahalagang elemento kung paano niyayakap ng mga layko ang Ispiritwalidad ni San Ignacio at isinasabuhay ang misyon ng educakasyong Heswita. Sumasalamin ang mga elementong ito sa karanasan, mga alalahanin, at pananaw ng apatnapu’t dalawang (42) laykong katuwang sa pakikipag-ugnayang Heswita-Layko. Sa kabuuan, ang Pagyakap sa Ispiritwalidad ni San Ignacio at sa Misyon ng mga Heswita ay nag-aalok ng isang modelong pangpormasyon sa pamumuno at isang balangkas para sa paglinang ng mga patakaran at programang pang-edukasyon para sa mga laykong pinuno, guro, at kawani –lalo na sa mga institusyong Heswita kung saan ang pakikipag-ugnayan sa misyon ay mahalagang bahagi ng pagkakakilanlan at praktika ng institusyon.
