Abstract/Summary
Leaders and managers were not prepared for the pandemic (Imperial, 2020). The Philippine Private HEIs rely on their own thus they feel most of the struggles and impacts caused by the crisis. This study aimed to uncover their experiences amidst COVID-19 by utilizing transcendental phenomenology. One-on-one online interviews were conducted to six representative Presidents of HEI categories: Congregation-Run Single-Campus, Congregation-Run Multi-Campus, Corporation-Run Single-Campus, Corporation-Run Multi-Campus, Family-Run Single-Campus, and Family-Run Multi-Campus. Data analysis followed Moustaka’s modification of van Kaam’s. It was found that the composite textures of experiences were adapting and adjusting to the situation, coming up with plans and direction and doing monitoring, having time management, innovating and restructuring, being present and involved, dealing with concerns on enrollment and resources, shifting to online, communicating, having collaboration and facing the situation as community, connecting, caring for stakeholders, and facing duality of values and emotions. The composite structures- nature of pandemic, nature of institution, and nature of self, which made the experiences varied, were derived through analyzing the existentials- temporality, corporality, spatiality, materiality, and relationality. Survival- both in personal and professional and institutional aspects, being influenced by the three structures was the essence of the experiences of the Presidents in the pandemic. There were experiences shared by the Presidents unique to their institutional categories. It was concluded that the Presidents were under the same pandemic, but they were not totally the same in experiences. A model was created to show the interplay of constructs and as the basis for implications and recommendations.
