Abstract/Summary
The present study looked into the lived experiences of six Service-Learning instructors at a Catholic higher education institution in Manila, Philippines. Through phenomenological reduction and thematic analysis, the following nine textural themes have emerged: existing personal frameworks paved the way for the experience; holistic learner development attained through effective communication, scaffolding, and dynamic learning experiences; personal fulfillment and accomplishment through self, community, and spirituality; wholeness of being and integration of roles overcame challenges; being a witness, instrument, and an exemplar of transformation; worked towards attaining the highest standards of Service-Learning; deeper community understanding through empathy; institutional and collegial support provided direction and encouragement; and one's faith is the cornerstone of the experience.
Through imaginative variation, the following structures have been identified: self-knowledge and self-actualization are vital to the experience; how much and what one gives is equally important as how much and what one receives; a planguide-cum-roadmap is an essential part of the experience; the experience is transformational; and one’s time and space are filled with reaching out for noble standards and being with like-minded people.
Taken together, these textures and structures of the experience all point to the essence that being a Service-Learning instructor is a process that one goes through: a forging of one’s being - a refinement process that clarifies, distills, and crystalizes one’s knowledge, abilities, attitudes, behaviors, competencies, and whole being into a unique and useful tool beneficial to the university and the community.
